Please reread the above line.  It says the '-r' option is only valid
with the '-g' and '-u' options, not by itself.  And there it works fine:

% id
uid=248(jdarrow) euid=0(root) gid=0(wheel) groups=0(wheel),5(operator),20(staff)
% id -u
0
% id -ur
248
