There was still something, and judging the port-i386 list possibly
important, missing in my first post.

I should add to that the VIA chipset in use is of the following type:
	VIA VT82C585 (Apollo) PCI-ISA
	(it's a Northbridge, according to VIA)

I saw additional pointers on VIA 686 Southbridge chips having
trouble with HD's on the port-i386 list, but my chip isn't of that
type. Trying out the pointers for the 686 chips made no
difference, though.

Any help is greatly appreciated,
