Do this;
mount a partitoin /
to do this first edit /etc/fstab
like this
/etc/fstab
/dev/wd0a / ffs rw 1 1
/dev/wd0b none swap sw 0 0
/kern /kern kernfs rw
/dev/wd1a / ffs rw 1 1

then reboot

and write a file...
and reedit /etc/fstab
/dev/wd1a /mnt/data ffs rw 1 1
and reboot

then try to find the file which you wrote.

perhaps youUll be able to find the file

redo above things...
then you can find the file.
