This was getting curiouser and curiouser ... finally I decided to try the
Microsoft-style fix, and rebooted the system (it had been up for 228 days).
And it's cured!

So it looks like something in the kernel had got corrupted over time.
Unlikely to be reproducible, though.  :-(
