>Description:
The recent changes to make(1) break the evaluation of expressions like
"${MASTER_SITE_GNU:=emacs/}" or even cause segmentations faults. This
especially effects "pkgsrc".

>How-To-Repeat:
cd /usr/pkgsrc/editor/emacs
make distclean
make fetch-list

cd /usr/pkgsrc/math/gnumeric
make distclean
make fetch-list

>Fix:
Backing out "src/usr.bin/make/var.c" revision 1.44 fixes the problem.
