make install in the gnome-print directory wants to create
$HOME/.gnome
If you've used a sudo-like program which changes user ID to 
root, but doesn't reset HOME (or maybe USER) in the environment
_and_ your home directory is on a different machine which is
not exported with -maproot=root, then you loose.
