fdformat causes a kernel panic. when the machine goes catatonic, it
pukes up:
panic: fdcintr: spurious interrupt can't be cleared
i have never been able to mount a floppy, if this is related at all.
NOTE: the GENERIC kernel build also had this problem, it has nothing to
do with a funny kernel config or something. This also occured in kernel
1.4.
