which seems to be interprested as a not-equal test. I've chosen to remove these lines which fortuitously (I think not) occur at the position of page-breaks, as in the printed BSD44 URM. I suspect they're something like new-line to overcome some formatting glitch then extant.
I haven't looked at strip which is prepared from /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/binutils/binutils.info
