Forgot to mention about this PR:

I'm planning to retire the machine from service (and stop using PPP
altogether) in less than two weeks, if all goes well.  (getting IDSL.)

Therefore, if there's any desire to have me provide more debugging
info, it's best to know sooner rather than later.
