although it isn't relevant anymore, this isn't right, given the
situation i believed i was in:

- /var/spool/news owned by root.wheel
- /var/spool/news being the basedir for articles

if innd is running as news.news, it _can't_ create .../news/eterna.


this was the whole crux of this discussion, and it seems that newer
INN'd make it moot :-)
