System: NetBSD 1.3H NetBSD 1.3H (_splode_) #382: Wed Oct 28 16:53:34 EST 1998 sparc

the NetBSD NFS server does not let a non-root user mkfifo. it does
not matter who the client is, although NetBSD and SunOS (4 & 5) give
	different error messages.

as non-root, try this on a FS mounted "normally" (ie, no `nodev' even)
	from a NetBSD nfs server:

	NetBSD > mkfifo foo
	mkfifo: foo: Input/output error

	Solaris > mkfifo foo
	mkfifo: Not owner
