This does not seem to be port-i386 specific; I also get it on
a sparc 2 when booting over the net and mounting an nfs root filesystem.

Some time after the boot process has finished, the panic above happens.
The problem vanished after connecting a hard disk to the machine 
and using it as root/swap.
