John suggested the same patch to me, which I tried on one system
exhibiting this behavior.  They didn't go away entirely; maybe they
became less frequent, but I'm not really sure. 

I have no particular desire to go disassembling the BIOS to figure out
what's going on but I suspect that that's what it will take to get to
the bottom of this..
