der Mouse gave a rather excellent argument for this behavior, which i
accept completely.  basically, "because it can do that and it's easy
to get around if you don't like it and if you do want it but it's not
there, you're screwed".  but that was after our particular thread
drifted off the list.  perhaps he'd like to repost it here?
