Hacking around one of the core parts of the BSD system isn't worth the gain
of "automatically" getting a tty. I quoted "automatically" because
truthfully, it's not automatic at all--it depends entirely on what you have
in /etc/ttys. The first free tty is still determined by what gettys you
have enabled there.

Another fix was proposed: put "xdm -nodaemon" in /etc/ttys on a free tty.
Technically this, _without_ having to modify Xservers, should have X pick a
free tty automatically.
