Isn't that paragraph mooted by the fact that bsd.subdir.mk now simply
prints "[skipped]" and continues if a source directory is missing?

If so, that paragraph should be eliminated, or replaced with one that
makes the obvious point that you can't rebuild anything for which you
lack the source.
