   Did mrg make progress with this? it'd be nice to have for building
   NetBSD-1.3 install kits.  (If it's fixed already, can we close this PR?)

i haven't dealt with it, though, it's still on my TODO.  if
someone else fixes/finishes it, that'd be great.
