I'm not sure that this is an improvement.  Basically, I'm real leary
of changing the output format or fundemental operation of a program
since I'm not able to tell what programs or scripts it might break.

And the benifit of changes like this one, where there are already well 
established tools to print out RCS Id's (ident), don't justify the risk
(or the code bloat) to me.

Anyone else care to comment?
