i'll bet it's a function of your kernel config.

I finally am back into a position where i can test kernels, etc.,
and i found a similar problem when booting kernels with NFSCLIENT
but not NFSSERVER defined.
it was fixed earlier in the day (i think; maybe yesterday)
by charles, by moving an #ifdef a few lines.
I now have no problems booting any kernels off floppies. Also note
that:
(1) old boot blocks should work (according to charles) with new
file systems
(2) newly-compiled boot blocks cannot be used with the old file system
layout.
get back to me if you're still having problems.
