Understandable, perhaps.

As I mentioned in my message, running it under gdb is useless because
it doesn't fail!  (And yes, I used "cp" to install it once I saw that
"make install" was stripping the binary).  With something so `delicate'
that running it as /usr/bin/file instead of file stops it from core
dumping its plausible that gdb also does something different (though it
shouldn't))

Thanks for looking.  Perhaps now that Charles Hannum can recreate it
there is a chance to debug it.
