I'm in cleanup mode, and just found that this bug was missfiled (thus,
most of you haven't seen it yet):

I agree that the erase and kill characters should be set consistantly
between root's .login & .profile.

Perhaps setting the erase & kill chars explictly via stty is the
incorrect thing to do.  I'd prefer that the "correct" setting for the
erase & kill chars for a particular machine's console be added to the
gettytab file.  Then getty will set the erase and kill characters
appropriately automatically.
