It should also not barf if either directory does not exist, for the
benefit of those few of us who *don't* use X11 (I need more disk!).
Right now I have an empty /usr/X386/lib directory on my system.  One
of these days I'll get around to figuring out how to keep it from
looking for the X libraries.
