I don't think the alt key ever worked on the pccons console without X,
though I'm currently typing this in a syscons which uses the "alt"
keys as a meta key.

BTW, I took the route of prefixing each keystroke with escape rather
than setting the eighth bit on meta, since that's more likely to
survive across remote login paths and doesn't usurp the use of the
eighth bit by 8859/x character sets (so you could turn left-alt into
meta and right-alt into compose if you were so inclined..)

I posted those patches a month or more ago on one of the
comp.os.386bsd groups..
