I'm a fan of the BSD license, but not for all applications. In
general, if you've got a real stake in the work you've done, it may
not be appropriate.

If you don't mine people doing _anything that they want to_ with your
work, the BSD license may be great for you. But if you do want to put
controls on, then you need something different.

How would you/your boss/your company feel if somebody took the work
you did, made it into a commercial product "on its own," then started
selling it for $$ and not giving away the sources to the work you did
(or similar)?

Not "added it into additional IP of theirs and made the whole thing
into a product", but just turned it directly into a product, e.g. that
could be then sold for use by customers or plugged into an RTOS
... etc.

You might also consider the LGPL. Using something like the LGPL could
require that people give away the source to the component taht you
provided, but keep their own sources private.
