This sort of flow control ("software" flow control) is next to useless.  
If you control a PPP connection on both ends, you can set the asyncmap to 
get around it, but...

I prefer CTS/RTS ("hardware") flow control.  Yes, it means I can't use a 
Mac serial port as a dialup very easily.
