Allen wrote to tell me that this was an old 1.0 bug which is now fixed.
Apparently i'm running out of buffers for socket options because ping
is being run so often and i have an older kernel:

$ netstat -m
816 mbufs in use:
	3 mbufs allocated to data
	5 mbufs allocated to packet headers
	12 mbufs allocated to protocol control blocks
	3 mbufs allocated to socket names and addresses
	793 mbufs allocated to socket options
2/20 mapped pages in use
122 Kbytes allocated to network (85% in use)
0 requests for memory denied
0 requests for memory delayed
0 calls to protocol drain routines

thanx, allen :)
