Found the problem, thanks to Kip Walker.  I had to go find (and install) 
Mode32 and hit the appropriate radio buttons to enable it.

How come this isn't in the INSTALL or README.late files?  Am I missing 
something obvious (like there's a file called README that I don't have)?  
And how come it worked with the Oct 20 kernel and not this one?

The urgency, for me at least, has abated, since I'm able to run the 
machine now.  Thanks for the help.
