Welp, after a few more hours of tinkering, desktop works, hfs is in and happy
and I'm not getting any more rolling prompts(line-feeds).

Cudo's to the Programmers for continueing with a few 100 ppl whining on
their screen in email land!  If I ever get to meet any of you, I'll buy the
first one.
