One method that often is successful is to send mail to foo-request@wherever,
where foo is the name of the mailing list you're concerned with, and wherever
is the machine on which it's kept. The -request signifies that the message
should go only to the maintainer of the list, and not to the subscribers.

In the case of MacBSD-General, this should (I hope) be forwarded to the
majordomo server, which would then send you an informational message, since
your initial message probably wouldn't make sense to it. In some cases
(like the mailing list I run), the mail actually goes to a human, who may
not be able to respond immediately to your request. So be patient when
sending mail to -request addresses - it could take a few days for your
wish to be granted.
