as i think i mentioned, using vipw creates a backup, which means that your
passwd file won't get hosed if the system crashes.  That's always nice,
even on a single-user system.

It also does the right thing with making the database automatically,
which keeps the sysad from having to know to invoke pwd_mkdb...
