Are you sure that this is not "/netbsd: No such file or directory?"

This may sound silly...  You kernel should be called "netbsd"
once you know that it works.  So, after booting netbsd.du.jour
and finding that it works, mv it to netbsd (keeping, of course,
a copy of a working kernel).
