Just wanted to follow up this discussion by saying that there is a piece
of share/freeware called PwrSwitcher which interprets a press of the
power key as a "switch front app to back" command... you could proably
contact the author and find out how he implemented that.

(Let me know if you want additional information; I'm not at my Mac right
now)
