To be blunt....
Should  will.
Although I have set this parameter and the shell env variable COLUMNS, "ls"
1) thinks that it will have a screen wide enough for 6 columns and builds
its sort list accordingly. But when it actually transfers, it forces a line
wrap at about col 80.
