Don't dismiss the Alpha out of hand...

I have just ordered two VX-40 units at $750 each from the following group buy:

  http://www.xray.duke.edu/multia/

The machines use stock PC parts (monitors, keyboard, mouse) and can run
Windows NT or RedHat Linux in addition to NetBSD. All in a nice compact box.

See the following:

  http://www.redhat.com/alpha
  http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/alpha/index.html

I don't see how you can beat the price/performance numbers...
