Is this on i386 or amd64? UP or MP kernel? Can you try this same test on a
'boot -x' to see the debug messages from pmf?
FYI, I'm using amd64 UP on a T61, with DEBUG/DIAGNOSTIC/LOCKDEBUG enabled,
and I haven't had any issues like this.
