Now for the important detail I missed out: there was

uplcom0: Prolific Technology PL2303 Serial adapter (ATEN/IOGEAR UC232A), rev 1.10/2.02, addr 2
ucom0 at uplcom0

plugged into the serial cable, but the USB end wasn't plugged into anything.
Whether the USB adapter is connected or not seems to make all the difference
between process blocking or not.
