data point-
updated alpha (64 bit) to 4.99.38 kernel and userland (20071129 src) and 
i get core dumps on most python/glib2/gtk2 related programs as well. 
Backing out userland to 4.99.33 (20071016 ) allows 4.99.38 kernel to run.
