Out of curiosity, and completely unrelated: how long are we talking about?
My machine needs a few minutes (I think < 5, but never timed it exactly),
so I decided it might not be worth to bring in the same optimization I
used for sparc64 to speed this up.

If others see slower dumps on amd64, I should reconsider that.
