Is it the drive's analog output hooked up to the audio chip? If so, is 
the appropriate mixer channel muted or anything? Do you get output on 
the drive's headphone connector?

'digital transfer mode' is simply 'rip the CD and feed the data to 
/dev/audio' or something like that. Looks like ripping doesn't work as 
intended here.
