On PowerPC, I had a very slow console on an Ibook Dual USB dated
2001. A solution had been to install and use screen. The display
was not faster per se of course, but when I splitted the screen
in two halves, each half was more speedy.. and I learned screen
after which has many more advantages.

A trick would then to use screen and use half-splits at least.
