One big advantage is performance. All of the raid processing is not=20
handled by the core CPU. When you figure in RAID5's XOR and associated=20
data cache impact, it can really make a difference.

Also, if you aren't using the hardware RAID capabilities, you've paid way=
=20
too much for a SATA controler card. :-)
