I'd like to vote for re-opening this PR and doing a proper fix, if at all
possible.

"This has been standard behavior for 9 years now" doesn't count as a valid
reason. If it has been long pratice that doesn't mean that it has been a
good thing.

I also stumbled over this issue recently and was puzzled what it should mean
and how to fix it. I got the right idea rather quickly, but probably not
everyone is that ingenious. :-)
