Yes.  See the recent thread "bootable kernel with embedded
filesystem."

Note that the GENERIC_LAPTOP kernel seems to boot fine and the
GENERIC_LAPTOP kernel modified to contain an embedded ramdisk also
boots fine.  Most of the other INSTALL_* kernels suffer from the same
problem, so this all seems to have something to do with a common
difference between GENERIC_* and INSTALL_*.
