Unfortunately, window systems are no longer such an
application. Modern window systems are all moving towards using the 3D
acceleration hardware to paint, move and manipulate windows. Both
Windows and OS X now make extensive use of 3D hardware. For good
or ill, even X is moving in this direction -- see systems like Cairo.
