Looking at radeon(4) under "supported hardware" on a 3.0 system:
       RV280       Radeon 9200PRO/9200/9200SE, M9+

What does your XFree86.0.log show? I'm running 1600x1200 on a horrible ATI
Rage Pro (the onboard video on a Sun Ultra 5/10), previously with 3.0_BETA
and now with -current.

How is your XF86Config setup? Are the frequencies for your monitor defined
correctly? If XFree86 _thinks_ your monitor can't handle 1280x1024, it
won't make the resolution available. You'll see lines like:
(II) ATI(0): Not using default mode "1024x768" (hsync out of range)

The Radeon 9200 is sufficiently old that it should be well supported by
XFree86, not requiring a move to
