Answering myself... I had

...
screen 2 80x50 vt100
screen 3 80x50 vt100
...

in /etc/escons.conf.

(the rest with just - instead of 80x50). This size spec stopped
ttyE[23] from initializing. It's OK after replacing it with '-'.
