10 to 1 that what happens when you get that error is that a (truncated)
output file is created anyway, so at the restart, that target is not
rebuilt again, so you don't get a repeat of the error. However, you will
not get exactly the resulting files that you should, either.
We've had that problem on the VAX now for atleast five years.
