Hm.  This was on OS X 10.4.  I _believe_ what I did was untarred the
distribution and did a "cvs update".  I don't believe I did a
"cvs checkout".

I just tried a completely new "cvs checkout" on an OS X 10.4 box at
work, with a case-insensitive filesystem on it.  Was able to check out
the tree, including gnu/dist/cvs, without a problem.  Maybe it's just
the CVS that comes with OS X 10.3?
