I saw that wiz had just updated the sane-backends package this morning
so I reinstalled it. Now "scanimage -L" reports the device:

device `plustek:libusb:/dev/usb2:/dev/ugen0' is a Canon LiDE25 USB
flatbed scanner

But I still can't scan:

# scanimage -d plustek:libusb:/dev/usb2:/dev/ugen0
scanimage: open of device plustek:libusb:/dev/usb2:/dev/ugen0 failed:
Error during device I/O

One step at a time. :-)
