Hi!

My NFS/NIS server (NetBSD/i386 2.0.2) stopped responding to NIS
queries and I had to walk down to the machine room and login as root
on the console. I was not able to login as I was just getting
"yp_first: clnt_call: RPC: Timed out" messages on the console (before
and after I typed "root" and the root password).

I thought there would be somekind of timeout so I waiting almost 10
minutes to get to the shell prompt but it never appeared so I had to
power off the whole machine.

And now some questions:

- why is NIS database queries done with local accounts?

- why isn't the NIS calls timing out?

- anyone else having problems with RPC services?
